What are the common signs of a water leak?

Water leaks are usually not easy to find, but if you know what to look for there's a good chance you can find it before it gets worse. Here are some common signs of a water leak:  If your toilets have been running more than usual or the sound of water is coming from somewhere in the house that doesn't seem right then that could be an indicator of a potential problem. Other ways to tell you might have a water leak include warped flooring near where your main line comes into the house and/or cracks in walls around outlets. If those things sound familiar, now would be the time to call out one of our expert plumbers for leak repair !

When searching for signs of a water

Water leaks result in water waste, water damage, or mold damage depending on the severity of the water leak. Water leaks can occur as a result of faulty water lines and water heaters, as well as old pipes and faucets. Not all water leaks are easy to detect.

By themselves, water stains on ceilings indicate some type of water problem such as a leaking roof, but generally does not directly indicate a water leak coming from indoors. However, water stains that expand over time may be an indicator of a larger issue and should be investigated more thoroughly.

Another sign of water leak is visible water pooling anywhere on your property — on your porch, in your backyard or next to your home's foundation. If you see water pooling, check around your home's exterior for water coming from a water source such as a water pipe.

Another sign of water leak is water damage on walls or floors. In some cases, it may be difficult to ascertain if water damage has been caused by water leaking from the ceiling or from rain through an open window. However, in some instances there may be a bulge or buckling in a wall near plumbing pipes that run vertically through the wall. This would indicate that water is seeping into the wall cavity and causing this bulging effect. [Technically, water doesn't cause bulging unless it causes pressure on the wood.]

In addition to these more obvious water leaks, other indicators that water is leaking into your home include water damage to ceilings, water spots on walls and water coming out of clogged up sinks.

When a water leak is suspected, it's best to call a plumber for further investigation and repair. A plumber can either search for water leaks or fix them with minimal water waste if the water leak problems are already known.

Finding and repairing water leaks as soon as possible will prevent water damage and wasted water which saves money in addition to reducing potential health hazards due to mold growth.
