How are one-way slab and two-way slab different?

The construction field has evolved a lot in the past few decades. Each decade saw a new improvement on the construction method, where some methods were lauded for their excellent applications and features they provided, some did not have a chance to take their place in the market. Some techniques though went haywire, few are here to stay for a long time, given the plethora of advantages, and the large benefits they provide to the users as a whole. According to slab leak repair Anaheim, one such construction type that saw significant changes and now has almost sub types of its sub types are the slabs.

Comparing with the techniques used a few decades back, slab designs have continuously evolved but the two slab designing techniques that remain intact in their place are the one-way slab and two-way slab. One-way slab and two-way slab are the basic types of slabs used in any construction field, let us take a look at the difference they pose.

What are one-way slabs?

One way slabs are slabs that are espoused by internal beams on two opposite sides of the frame. Veranda slab is a type of one-way slab.

What are two-way slabs?

Two-way slabs are espoused by the beam on all four sides of the frame. The best example of such types of slabs is in parking lots of multi-storey buildings.

Significant Differences

Beam direction:

1.One way slab:

The one-way slab only consists of two grids on frontal sides, the load must be distributed on the longer side. Thus internal beams are placed parallel to the shorter side to ensure the adequate load on the structure.

2.Two-way slab:

The frame of concrete is espoused on all sides and hence beams are equally distributed.

Deflection shape:

  • One way slab has a cylindrical deflection shape.

  • The two-way slab has a disc-like deflection shape.

Thus the two major differences that lie in both the techniques are the beam support and deflection shape. According to a slab leak repair Anaheim two-way slabs are highly preferred due to their sturdy nature by many people and it is also easy to watch out for any structural discrepancies. Yet, the one-way slab has its benefits and can be used in applications whenever required.
