5 Steps To Protect Your Home From Water Damage

It’s unfortunate, but nearly every home will eventually have at least one water issue. The reason is that water is everywhere in the world and cannot be contained. It creeps into houses, apartments, and condos through walls, pipes, and plants. One day your home might have a small leak or an unchecked overflow of a pipe on the roof; another day it might experience a flood from broken pipes connected to your dishwasher or washing machine, and another it might happen when someone accidentally leaves a faucet open.

Either way, water can cause great damage to your home and personal possessions. The good news is that you can prevent your house from water damage in San Diego with these 5 simple steps. Water leaks are actually very common in homes because people forget to check the water inside and outside their homes.

1. Check for water leaks in your home

The first step in checking your home for leaks is to turn off all the faucets, including those on your toilets. Next, run a little water into an empty sink and then listen for any sound of running water. If you hear anything, it’s probably a leak somewhere in your home.

If this happens to be in the basement, check the floor around the pipes to make sure that they are dry. If you find that the problem is just condensation from the cold pipes, you can dry them off with a towel and then turn on the faucet again.

If there’s water leaking under your home or anywhere else inside your house, make sure to turn off all of the water to your house so that it doesn’t drain away while you are working on the repairs. You should also check for signs of leaks along the walls and ceilings.

2. Check your toilets for leaks

The most common, and often the most costly, leak is in the toilet. These usually occur when the flapper or seat on your toilet fails to seal completely and water seeps out over a period of time. It’s not normally noticed nor is it even checked regularly, but it can result in hundreds or even thousands of dollars worth of damage. You can contact EZ Plumbing Restoration and they can easily fix this type of water damage and avoid further destruction to your house.

3. Check your water faucets

The next most common problem is water leaks from the faucet on your sink or full-size bathtub and shower. Leaks in these faucets can be caused by defective washers, worn-out screws or nuts that need to be replaced, a loose pipe behind the sink, or even from paint fumes coming through the wall.

To fix this type of leak, you will need to remove the faucet from the sink or shower and then turn off the water supply. You can then apply a special chemical called caulk to the leak and reattach it, but before you do that, be sure to shut off any water pipes that are connected behind the sink or shower. Once everything is reconnected and turned back on, check for leaks by turning on both hot and cold faucets. This should fix the leak.

4. Check your pipe connections

If you have a deep, high-pressure water pipe under the house, leaks in this pipe can also occur at the connection joints (the area where the two pipes are connected). These leaks are also usually caused by worn-out or defective fittings. Once again, this type of leak is very easy to fix as long as you can find and replace defective parts.

5. Check your house connections

If you have a pipe that runs through your yard or garden to help water your plants, hose connections can also leak. In this case, the main culprit is usually a cracked hose, but it can also be caused by a build-up of dirt or debris on the connection where the hose connects to the faucet. If you find any leaks from this type of hose, fill in the area with a material such as a pipe cement and leave it there until it dries. Then, turn on the water and check for leaks.

You also should check the hose itself for cracks. Be sure that it’s in good condition and not fraying around the edges. If you do find a hole in your garden hose, replace it immediately to avoid losing all your garden water. Once you have replaced any bad parts, be sure to use an antifreeze product on the connection where the hose connects to the faucet to prevent future leaks from freezing pipes in winter.

Conclusion:

Water leaks in your home will cost you money to repair or replace if you don’t catch them right away. If they happen while you’re not at home, they can damage your possessions and furniture beyond repair. That’s why you should always check for leaks in every room of your home. If it happens, the sooner you detect water leaks and fix them, the less water damage will be caused by the leak.
